Cook Medical joins leading companies in Ireland in signing Low Carbon Pledge

Cook Medical has been announced as the latest company to sign Business in the Community’s Low Carbon Pledge. Originally launched in 2018, the Low Carbon Pledge is the first dedicated pledge by Irish businesses to set industry standards on sustainability and to reduce carbon emissions.

By signing the pledge, together with over 60 leading companies in Ireland, Cook Medical commits to setting science-based emission-reduction targets for its Limerick site by 2024. This includes measuring and reducing its entire carbon footprint (scope 1, 2, and 3) in line with the Paris Agreement and the latest findings from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

“We are proud to sign the Low Carbon Pledge and to commit to reducing our carbon emissions. Now more than ever it’s important for Irish businesses to work collaboratively on solutions to address climate change,” explained Bill Doherty, executive vice president for EMEA and managing director of Cook Medical Europe.

“Our commitment to improving peoples’ lives extends beyond patients to the communities in which we operate and live. To that end, we are committed to making sustainable choices across our facilities and distribution channels in order to leave our environment better than we found it and to protect and develop the resources around us.”

Seamus Lloyd, environment health and safety manager, added, “We’ve made great progress over the last few years, focussing on reducing the environmental impact of our site in Limerick. Being a part of the Low Carbon Pledge is a great next step for us and solidifies our commitment in this area.”

As part of the Low Carbon Pledge, all signatory companies commit to reducing the intensity of their scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030. The pledge encourages collaboration among the signatory companies so they can learn from each other’s successes and challenges. By working together, they can bring about the change that is needed to build resilient and robust sustainable businesses.
